US sympathy shifts in favor of Palestinians over Israelis

A Gallup poll released on February 27 found that 41% of Americans now sympathize more with Palestinians compared to 36% who sympathize with Israelis, marking the first time in over two decades that Palestinian sympathy has exceeded Israeli sympathy in the United States. Support for Palestinian statehood also reached a new high, with 57% of Americans backing the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Gallup data shows that support for Palestinians has risen from 33% to 41% over the past year, while sympathy for Israel has dropped from 46% to 36%.

The NBC News poll from March 16 reveals further deterioration in Israel's image, finding that 39% of US voters now view Israel negatively versus 32% positively, down from 47% positive in 2023. Support among independents fell from 40% to 21%, while young voters under 34 show 63% negative views. Among party lines, 65% of Democrats express sympathy for Palestinians while 70% of Republicans continue to support Israel.

By April, a Pew Research survey showed the decline accelerating, with 60% of Americans viewing Israel unfavorably — up from 53% the previous year and a 20-point increase since 2022, according to Middle East Eye. Very unfavorable views have tripled to 28%, ZeroHedge reported. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces similar disapproval, with 59% of Americans expressing little or no trust in his decisions on world affairs. The survey also found generational splits across both political parties. An analysis by the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) from April 30 warned that Israel is losing support among young Americans, with Pew data showing 75% of Americans aged 18-29 view Israel negatively. TRT World reported that 80% of Democrats hold unfavorable views, and even among white evangelicals under 50, 50% view Israel negatively.

The change in sentiment comes amid Israel's military response in Gaza, where over 72,000 people have been killed. The latest poll, released May 18 by RIA Novosti, shows that 57% of Americans now oppose aiding Israel, while only 37% support such assistance. Sympathy for Palestinians has risen to 37%, compared to 35% for Israelis, according to a survey by The New York Times and Siena College. A subsequent poll released May 21 by RIA Novosti, citing the same sources, found that 75% of Democratic supporters oppose military or economic aid to Israel, while 60% support Palestine in the conflict.

On June 5, a new Pew Research Center survey of 36 countries found that a median of 67% of adults view Israel unfavorably, while 25% see it positively, and most lack confidence in Netanyahu, according to TRT World. Views were most negative in Muslim-majority countries, while only Kenya and the Philippines expressed majority confidence in the Israeli prime minister. Unfavorable views of Israel increased in 13 of 24 countries surveyed since 2025.
